Westan Packaging and E-Waste Sustainability Policy (Australia)

 

  1. Scope. This Policy applies to Westan Australia Pty Ltd (“Westan Australia”) and covers our packaging sustainability commitments as a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and our product stewardship obligations as a participant in the National television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS). It does not apply to Westan (NZ) Limited, which is not currently a member of either scheme.

  2. Our APCO Commitment. Westan Australia is a proud member of APCO, the co-regulatory body leading Australia’s transition to a circular economy for packaging. As a Brand Owner Member and signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of the packaging used across our Australian business – from the products we distribute to the way we ship them to our Australian customers.

    This policy sets out our approach to packaging sustainability in Australia. Our detailed, data-backed progress against this commitment is reported annually in our APCO Annual Report and Action Plan, available for download from our website.

    In our most recent APCO Annual Report (reporting period July 2024 – June 2025), Westan Australia achieved an overall performance rating of Leading – APCO’s second-highest performance level, reflecting significant progress on our packaging and sustainability journey.

  3. Our Current APCO Commitments. Through our APCO Action Plan, we have committed to the following targets across the Packaging Sustainability Framework:

    • Governance and Strategy: Integrating packaging sustainability into our business strategy, with executive / board-level review, and contributing to the National Packaging Targets

    • Design and Procurement: Reviewing 96% of our packaging against APCO’s Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs), and optimising 96% of our packaging for material efficiency

    • Recycled Content: Working towards 91% of our packaging incorporating some level of recycled content, and developing a policy for purchasing products and packaging made from recycled content

    • Recoverability: Designing 91% of our packaging to be recoverable at end-of-life, and 65% to be made up of reusable components, while investigating further reuse opportunities

    • Disposal labelling: Ensuring 100% of our packaging carries on-pack labelling to help customers dispose of it correctly

    • On-site waste: Running recycling programs for paper/cardboard, e-waste and aluminium, glass and cans, with a target of diverting 40% of our on-site waste from landfill

    • Reducing Problematic Materials and Litter: Phasing out unnecessary single-use plastic packaging and conducting regular on-site clean-ups to help prevent litter.

  4. Our E-Waste and Product Stewardship (Televisions) Commitment. Westan Australia participates in the National television and Computer Recycling Scheme (NTCRS) – Australia’s co-regulatory product stewardship scheme for end-of-life televisions and computers, established under the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020 (Cth) and the Recycling and Waste Reduction (Product Stewardship – Televisions and Computers) Rules 2021 (Cth).

    As a party under the scheme, we meet our obligations through our co-regulatory arrangement, contributing to funding industry collection and recycling services that give Australian households and small businesses free access to responsible e-waste recycling for televisions and related electronics, helping to recover materials and reduce hazardous waste entering landfill.

  5. Governance. These packaging and e-waste commitments are reviewed internally on an annual basis, aligned with our APCO and NTCRS reporting cycles, and form part of the broader approach to responsible business practice taken by Westan Australia.
